Obituary of Samuel Silva
Samuel Silva, MD, 89, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at his home.Dr. Samuel Silva was born June 4, 1928 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. His grandfather, Dr. Samuel Silva, a surgeon and Mayor of Torreon, greatly influenced him. After attending private school, Dr. Silva graduated from medical school at the top of his class at the Universidad de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico.In January 1953, he traveled to the US to serve an internship at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco. There he met Betty Ann Sims and they married in October of 1953. Their first son, Samuel Silva Jr. was born July, 1954. Dr. Silva served residency in a tiny village in the mountains west of Monterrey, Mexico, where he delivered babies and cared for the sick. His mode of transportation was horseback.He rejoined Betty and they moved to Pueblo, CO for Dr. Silva to complete his surgical residency. Their second son, Mark Anthony Silva arrived in 1955.In 1956 the family moved to Fort Worth where Dr. Silva worked at St. Joseph Hospital Their third son, Scott Walter Silva arrived in December 1956.Dr. Silva was busy with emergency room rotations and surgeries while building his private practice. In 1960, their fourth son, Stephen Carl Silva arrived and in 1968, daughter, Melinda Diane completed the family.During this time, Dr. Silva continued building his practice and performing surgery at three different hospitals as well as continuing to make house calls. In 1972, he was installed as President of the Family Practice Physicians of Tarrant County.Through the years, he has served his community helping many people and saving many lives, all while balancing family and work.In addition to his parents, Dr. Silva was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Ann Sims Silva, sons, Samuel Silva Jr. and Scott Walter Silva, grandson, Samuel Patrick Silva, and sister, Mary DeLaCruz Durrell.Survivors: Children, Mark Anthony Silva, Stephen Carl Silva, Melinda Diane Silva; granddaughter, Shawn Kelly Silva Sweet and husband, Daniel; three great grandchildren; sisters, Graciella Salem Silva and Yolanda Silva; nephews and nieces.
