Obituary of James Glynn Stouffer

James (Jim) Glynn Stouffer, M.D. died peacefully Sunday, May 13, 2018, in Fort Worth, at age 95.Jim was born January 30, 1923, in the White Rock House, Waukesha, Wisconsin. He attended Carroll College and the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1944, and M.D. degree in 1946, while in the Navy V-12 Program. Jim served a rotating internship, and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Milwaukee Hospital and Marquette University School of Medicine, 1946-50. After a brief period of private practice in Milwaukee, he joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and was based at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, TX, serving as Chief of OB/GYN. Jim left active duty in 1952, and remained in Fort Worth, where he practiced for 45 years. He and his wife, Margaret, moved to their Parker County ranch in 1979, and he retired in 1997.Jim delivered more than 10,000 babies during his career, including the last baby born in the old Harris Hospital, followed by the first baby born in Jones Tower of Harris Hospital. He was a pioneer in introducing new gynecological procedures to Fort Worth. Jim often joked that he delivered most of Fort Worth and loved running into former patients, always remembering each and every one of them. Jim also cared deeply about his nursing staff.Jim served as Chief of OB/GYN at John Peter Smith Hospital from 1963-65. He also served as Chief of OB/GYN at Harris Methodist Hospital from 1965-68, and as Chief of Staff from 1970-72. Jim served as President of the Dallas-Fort Worth OB/GYN Society in 1976. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of OB/GYN and a member of the Tarrant County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Texas Association of OB/GYN, Texas Surgical Society, American College of OB-GYN, and a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons.Jim was a dedicated member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church since 1952, and also a member of All Saints’ Anglican Church in Weatherford.Jim looked forward to spending his summers at the family’s cabin in Centennial, Wyoming. He was an ardent fly fisherman and loved trading the Texas heat for the cool Wyoming mountains and clear, cold trout streams. He and Margaret shared a special love of the cabin, and they have passed this fondness down to their children and their families.Jim was a loyal fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and the TCU Horned Frogs. He also looked forward to Salon, his Parker County wine club. He especially cherished his family and loved spending time with his multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who knew him fondly as “Grandpa”. We will treasure the many years that Jim was in our lives and will hold close to the wonderful memories we have of him.Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Marshall Stouffer, and brother, Don Allen Stouffer.Survivors: He is survived by his children, Mike and wife, Sally, Paul and wife, Mary Jeanne, James, Jr., and wife, Phyllis, Mary Stouffer Cole and husband, Billy; grandchildren, Paul McAfee Stouffer and wife, Kate, Caroline Stouffer Brown and husband, Will, Charlotte Stouffer Payne and husband, Nelson, Stephanie Margaret Stouffer, 1st LT James (Jay) Glynn Stouffer III, USMC, and wife, Elizabeth, LTJG Phillip Marshall Stouffer, USN, Jessie Kate Cole, and Cummins Stouffer Cole, and five great-grandchildren.
