Obituary of Jewell Lucille Abshire Elliott
Jewell died peacefully Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Hospice care at Baylor All Saints. She lived a long and independent life of 97 years, however 2020 was tedious. Isolation from family, activities, and the death of Glen, her husband of 74 1/2 years in August, took it’s toll. Her plucky spirit became bridled and rather lost. Heaven surely means pie and coffee with Glen, family gatherings, and of course, some competitive bowling, softball, dominos, or horseshoes.Born in Oklahoma, to William Joseph Abshire and Oda Mae Barnes, Jewell was the youngest of 7 children. Her first three siblings did not survive childhood. Life was hard. The family moved to Texas and Jewell grew up in Perrin, where farming and cotton picking were the economic mainstay. She loved school and thrived in all the sports she could play, specifically softball and volleyball. Crops came first though, and all hands were needed, so absence from school was often required. Her diligence, love of athletics, and determined nature kept her returning until her graduation credits accrued. One of her most cherished possessions was her class ring, bought for her by faculty and coaches. Life was better. Fort Worth soon became her home and Montgomery Ward a lifelong career. Jewell’s conscientious work ethic and attention to detail were well suited for the accounting dept. At the end of the war, she married Glen, whom she had met through her brother. Life was good in 1946.The family grew to four with the birth of son Mike and daughter Janet. They moved to Azle in 1956 where they could pursue their dream on 11 acres. Community softball leagues and a new bowling alley were a great addition to her activities. Life was full.ONE year ago, in early March, Jewell was still bowling, with friendly side ‘quarter bets’ and yoga. Her sassy personality, still in full bloom, while meeting the newest great grandchildren. Life soldiered on.Survivors: Son, Mike Elliott; daughter, Janet Elliott Gallagher and husband Patrick; grandchildren, Michael Elliott and wife Jennifer, Ryan Gallagher and wife Samantha, Carey Gallagher and wife Melissa, Caitlin Gallagher and husband Alex Haas, and Miles Gallagher; great grandchildren, Sarah and Ethan Elliott, Elliott, Austin, Anadele, and Estelle Gallagher, Charlie Gallagher and Theodore Haas; her loved ones include many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.Jewell’s spirited genes live strongly on through the next three generations. Life, the circle of life, continues.
