Obituary of Judith Montgomery

Judy Montgomery woke up in heaven on February 2nd at 11:54 PM. She fought valiantly after surviving a heart attack on December 5th, 2022, but the ensuing complications proved to be fatal after a 61-day battle.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at Open Door Church in Burleson, Texas at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 11th, 2023. Doors will open at 1:30 PM.

A viewing will be held at Thompson’s Harveson Cole, 4350 River Oaks Blvd., from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 9th, 2023.

Judy will be remembered for her love of her family and friends, her compassion when ministering to the brokenhearted, and her desire to spend quality time and having meaningful conversations with everyone that she loved. She held nothing back and never gave up when helping people find emotional and spiritual freedom and would often have hours long ministry sessions. She was a beloved wife, mother, Gigi, mother-in-law, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, and friend. A Texas-sized gap exists in the hearts of everyone who knew this West Texan gal who came to live in Fort Worth after meeting her husband, Rick Montgomery, of almost 50 years, in the lunch line at Melwood Baptist Church while attending her first weekend at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas in August of 1972. Rick and Judy fell quickly in love and were married on August 10th, 1973.

Judy is survived by her husband, Rick Montgomery, three sons and daughters-in-law: David and Ronna Montgomery, Daniel and Laura Montgomery, and Jeffrey and Valerie Montgomery; five grandchildren: Zachary, Emma, Carol, Eliana, and Cecilia; three brothers: Bryan, Tom, and Jimmy Shelburne; two sisters: Anne Russell and Lynne Darnell; countless cousins, nephews, and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lesley and Betty Shelburne, twin sister Jan Teer, baby sister Carol Shelburne, and grandson Zeb Montgomery.

Judy was known for fundraising for her family charity that gave away soccer balls in memory of her beloved grandson, Zeb, who passed from leukemia as well as mission work through Rick Montgomery Missions, which she cofounded with her husband, Rick.

Judy had a long-term vision of funding the construction of water wells in Africa and had been saving cash to help make that a reality.
