So sad to hear of Nancy's passing. She & I grew up together in Yukon, OK. Our families were great friends & attended the same church for many years. We often slept over at each other's homes during our grade school & early Jr. high school years. I loved going to their farm. Everette & Jane Ann were always so kind, as were Monte & Mike. I remember in the early 1970's Nancy had a red patent leather coat that zipped off in sections, from maxi to midi to mini. I was so jealous! (Hey, it was the '70's! What can I say?) Nothing but good memories of Nancy. She will be missed. Much love to her family. ❤️

I was honored to speak at Nancy's memorial and wanted to share my memories.
Hello, I am Karen Privott Schultz. I am here today with Carol and Sue. Al shared Nancy’s request to have the three of us speak today and I understand why - between us, we span elementary school to empty nest.
As for myself, I don’t know the exact day that I met Nancy because I can’t remember not knowing her. It has been at least 50+ years. Roy, my 91-year-old father, told me last week that when I was growing up he couldn’t remember seeing me without seeing Nancy. That’s how I remember my life as well. I was blessed to have had her by my side.
I have a lifetime of memories. So I have chosen two things to share that I will always remember about Nancy.
Besides that beautiful smile that Nancy always greeted everyone with - everyone here knows her smile and how she sparkled!!! I see the same smile in her beautiful daughters, Nicci and Kimi.
Nancy had two other “looks” that I learned to recognize instantly
One of the looks is when she and I we were discussing something important.
She would cock her eyebrow and look right at me…and dive into the matter at hand.
In elementary school, important topics could have been about:
Whose house Nancy, Tamie, and I were spending the night. Or a report from Nancy about events on the farm - a new calf or how many cats Mike had neutered.
in high school - important topics could have been about:
basketball, boys, student council trips, How were we getting to Ken’s pizza after the game? Our senior year it was about all the last times for the class of 79! Basketball State Playoffs, Nancy being crowned Miss Miller, Prom, Party Proms, and did we have enough gas to drag main. Nancy and I took the ACTs the night after the prom and applied to one college, OU.
In college as freshman roommates important topics included how to deal with our crazy suitemate, life on the 7th floor of Walker, the sororities we joined, the first frat parties we attended, and what we were choosing as our majors. Nancy, of course, knew she was going to be a teacher!
As we got older the important discussion became more important,
She would cock that eyebrow as we discussed “How she had met this guy named Al, I had met this guy name Steve, we were getting married 6 months apart. I was moving to San Francisco she was moving to Pittsburgh and was having a boy, she was having a girl. She was moving to Orlando, We discussed how life sometimes was rocky, what we were worried about. We shared the loss of parents and the joy of our kids getting married and becoming parents themselves.
During all of these important discussions, even if we were on the phone and I couldn’t see her, I knew she was cocking that eyebrow as she listened and giving me her most honest and best advice.
Now for the second look….. That second look….. Was the mischievous grin she gave when we came up with a scheme of some kind. I call it her ‘Take it to the Limit” look.
In high school, she would lite up as we planned how to ditch first hour French and go to Ricks's donuts and that look as we put snow in Ms. Fuch's extra shoes under her desk. We got sent to Coach Lobahs office for that one. During sleepovers, she would giggle with that look in her eye as we crawled out of my bedroom window and sit on the roof to spy on the boys down the street. She invited LOL. We would laugh on and on about our silly schemes.
In our freshman year of college, the mischief continued, We moved our suitemate's bedroom out into the hall, slept out all night for OU football tickets, and went to our first OU/Texas game and got fake ids.
After college and we had started our families, and Nancy and Al were always game for an adventure. Are families took trips to Disney World, had Thanksgiving Turkey in a Box in Palm Springs, explored San Francisco, China Town and toured London with all 5 kids in tow - Mind the Gap took on a whole new meaning. And of course, Nancy always had a witting comment where ever we were.
About 20 years ago as the kids were getting older and we had more freedom, Nancy and I started going on girls' trips to celebrate our August birthdays. We went to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Scottsdale, Napa, Dallas, and Carmel. During many of these trips, one or both of us would find ourselves in a predicament, usually as a result of my lack of directional skills. As Nancy like to say “I am directionally challenged”. This may or may not have resulted in her being sent to the “European Pool” in Vegas, or us getting lost while hiking on Camelback Mountain and Carrie Underwood asking us if we needed help or us walking for over two miles in our wedges through Carmel until a policeman helped us back to our hotel. I don’t think it was ALL my fault…..but maybe, Nancy never got mad she just made a joke and then we laughed until we cried.
I will admit to not always knowing the most direct route to where I needed to go.
But the one thing I do know is that Nancy was my true North. She was always by my side through so many important times and some of the most hilarious times of my life. I am so thankful for a lifetime of LOLs shared with her.
Al, Nicci, and Kimi - You are the center of her world and she lives on through you.

Mrs. Lachowicz, you were first an amazing teacher to me, and secondly (when I met Nicci (my grade) and Kimi (my brothers grade)!) an amazing mom.
I vividly recall her assignments. I will preface this by saying that I cannot recollect any other math assignments assigned from ANY OTHER teacher from my formative years. However, Mrs. Lachowicz was different. I can specifically remember my enthusiasm and joy spent on the assignments Mrs. Lachowicz assigned - furnishing a house on a budget? (still refining to this day!) learning to write a check properly (definitely came in handy).
I had her as my math teacher in 5th or 6th grade, before I met Nicci and Kimi. I also remember her talking about Nicci (in my head, at the time, spelled as "Nikki"), and Kimi (in my head, at the time, spelled as "Kimmy") - as an 11/12 year old, I thought to myself: those girls gotta be cool! Esp with Mrs. L as their mom! What I didn't know is that I would become friends with them later, and even have Mrs. L in our carpool.
I almost forgot I knew Mrs. Lachowicz before I met Nicci. There's one constant though: Nicci carries the exuberance, joy and affinity for harmony that I also experienced with Mrs. Lachowicz, and that will live on and never be forgotten.

In-laws, ugh, “you can't live with them, you can't live without them”. Wait, that's spouse. But the moment Nancy became our sister-in-law, she was a very welcomed addition to this crazy family and we knew she would fit right in. Her fun-loving spirit, humor, extraordinary kindness, and sincere laughs at her father-in-law's jokes no matter how many times she heard them, made her a true Lachowicz. As the event coordinators for our numerous family reunions in Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, Myrtle Beach, and Jacksonville, we scheduled things such as shows, dinners, go-cart events, and baseball games. One particular dinner-show in Las Vegas was “Marriage Can Be Murder” where audience participation was mandatory. A family member played in the band, our mother was constantly heckled and Nancy's role was a “lady of the evening” which she played quite convincingly and had many quick witty off the cuff-remarks for some of her clients. We were so fortunate that she came into Allen's life and we will cherish all the memories she left us as part of our family.

Nancy was the best Chi Omega Big Sis and I had the privilege of being her Lil Sis at OU. We had so much fun and she was always there for me. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior my freshman year & Nancy was there to help me understand what it meant to walk with Him. I remember the fun we had going to Red River, NM with her precious parents. Nancy’s joy & laughter were infectious. My heart breaks that her days were so short on this earth but I’m incredibly grateful God allowed our paths to cross.

MEMORIES OF NANCY SMITH LACHOWICZ:
Nancy was an integral part of my happy memories: I met Jane Ann Montgomery in the late 1940s, when I accepted a job at Paramount Film Distributing Co. in Oklahoma City. A beautiful, tall, willowy, blonde with a ready smile, greeted me and made me feel welcome and at ease. She was a book- keeper and I was to be the secretary. We became friends.
Early on, she told me she wanted me to meet her cousin who worked downstairs. He had a new job as well. Jane’s “matchmaker” expertise took over as she kept telling me about her cousin, Jim McKinney, who had been a pilot in the USAF during WW2. He was like a brother, a neat guy, etc. We finally met as he stood at the foot of the stairs and whistled at us. WOW! Jane achieved her goal as she promptly planned a hayride and invited us.
Jane was dating a young farmer, Everett Smith, who worked at a bank in addition to helping his father on the family farm. Jane & Everett, Jim & I, double dated, forming a lasting friendship. The Smiths were married in 1947 and we married in 1948.
We were excited to greet each of our children and continued a close relationship, doing special things like 4th of July celebrations in the Smith backyard and making Christmas candy every December. We kept up with our children as they grew…caring about each other.
Nancy was the youngest of our families. She was always fun to be around having inherited the humor of both parents who could always tell funny stories about life on the farm.
Enter Al Lachowicz into our story: Nancy was home from college, went grocery shopping with her “matchmaker” mom. They spotted a tall, handsome guy across the aisle and began to whisper how cute he was. Al kept glancing at Nancy as if he was interested. Jane encouraged Nancy to respond as well. They loaded their groceries and Jane circled her car around the parking lot to be in a vacant spot and Al followed by parking next to them while she and Nancy both waved and smiled at Al. He asked Nancy for her phone number, Jane approved. Nancy gave him her phone number. The dye was cast! Fate took over as their beautiful love story began.
God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform…even using a “matchmaker”!
I treasure times Al & Nancy came to visit me, the text messages sharing our faith, and will rejoice when we join Nancy and our loved ones who have gone before us, into that beautiful place called Heaven.

When I reflect on the 45 years that I have known Nancy, I think about what a constant she was. You could count on her to listen, to laugh and to encourage. She had the best nature of anyone I have ever known. I, too, was one of the lucky ones she led to Jesus and The Eagles and she made a big imprint on my heart. I love you Nancy Gayle.

Nancy was a beautiful “Lady” inside and out. Contagious smile and quick wit. Loved everyone she met. God works in mysterious ways we are told. Sometimes he needs more Angels to watch over those of us still seeking to find our way. Nancy is certainly one of those angels. God did show his love and mercy by giving Nancy the strength and courage to hold on until she could meet her a grandson Luke. One of the happiest days of her life. She will be sorely missed by all of us! We will always cherish her memory.

There are so many fun memories with Nancy which may seem strange to some people because we didn’t work together for a long period of time. The first time we met we were introduced as teaching partners; by the end of the afternoon I was calling her “Nanc” and we knew that we were literally only 5 days apart in age, and Leo friends for life. We had dress up days where we decked out in biker garb with tattoos, of course. We created a secret code so that when a particular student brought a particular item to us we knew that not only was this precious child on our last nerve but there was going to be a great story to share after school. Moving to Granbury led me to one of the most amazing, funny, beautiful, nonjudgmental, and wonderful people I have ever known. Although we didn’t talk often, we always seemed to be able to pick up life right where we were and laugh about something. God had our paths cross and I am thankful. I will rejoice loudly when I see my friend Nanc again in paradise.

Nancy was "My Girl Next Door", although we lived approximately a mile from each other in the Country.. We grew up together, as our parents were the Best of Friends.. We rode the same little yellow school bus together for years.. One would have to really search to discover a more Friendly, Kind and Good Person than Nancy.. So Fortunate to have known her.. As she will be missed by many.. She certainly will leave this ole world a much better place then when she entered it...
