Obituary of Nathaniel Armstrong Field Jr.

Fort Worth, Texas - Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) (Ret) Nathaniel A. Field Jr. US Army passed away on May 7, 2024. He was 93 years of age.

LTC Field moved to Fort Worth, Texas in August 1997 from the Kansas City, Missouri area in a return to his home state after 44 years with the US Army. LTC Field was born on April 30, 1931, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of Nathaniel A. and Odessa Mae Field.

LTC Field graduated from Overton Texas High School in 1949 and attended the University of Houston and East Texas Baptist University on a football scholarship, later finishing his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska Omaha in 1961. In 1951 he entered the US Army graduating the US Army Field Artillery Officer program in 1952. During his 24-year military career LTC Field attended the Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His assignments included a wide variety of staff positions and Battery and Battalion Command. These assignments included wartime duty in Vietnam and Cold War duty in Europe and Korea, culminating in his retirement at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1975.

His awards and decorations for military service include three awards of the Legion of Merit, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and service recognition for Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. Upon retirement from the Army in 1975 LTC Field immediately joined the Kansas City Missouri School District as the Military Science (ROTC) Director retiring in 1995. During this 20-year period LTC Field was instrumental in providing training for over 30,000 ROTC Cadets. He proudly wore the uniform of the United States Army for over 44 years.  Upon retirement, he received the US Army’s Outstanding Civilian Medal for his distinguished service as Director.

He was an active member in the Retired Officer Association, The Military Order of World Wars, and the American Legion. LTC Field was also an active volunteer as part of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, greater Kansas City Chapter and Urban League of Kansas City, Mo. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa, Kiwanis, KC Club, and Lions Clubs, Leavenworth, Kansas. Additionally, LTC Field served as the Uniformed Services Benefit Association, Kansas City, MO Board of Governors Secretary from 1984-1998.

Survivors include his wife Nina of 72 years; two sons, Steven A. Field and wife Patricia of New Orleans, LA, and William E. Field and wife Cathy, of Lawton OK. He is further survived by four grandchildren; Elizabeth Field of New Orleans, LA, Catherine Kimball of Graham, WA, Nathaniel C. Field of Lawton, OK, William C. Field and wife Lauren of Duncan, OK, and three great grandchildren including Dominic Sieracki of New Orleans, LA, and Kael and Kamilla Kimball of Graham, WA.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2024 at the Chapel at Doxology Bible Church, 4805 Arborlawn Dr, Fort Worth, Texas with the Chaplain Paul Reedy officiating. Burial will follow at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
