Wanda June Terry (better known as “Mamaw”) was a pillar of love and support for her family. There was never a problem too big or too small that she couldn’t offer her love, support, guidance, and unwavering faith. She and James William Terry (“Papaw”) created a wonderful home where the warmth of their love and faith extended far beyond family. It wasn’t uncommon to find a new face at Thanksgiving or Christmas as they embraced the opportunity to welcome new friends and provide a place to find genuine love and kindness during the holidays.
Knocking was a foreign concept in the Terry household, instead you entered shouting “knock-knock” where Mamaw was usually the first to respond with a very southern “yell-oh?” and offered you something to eat. When she wasn’t reading or doing her crossword puzzles, Mamaw could be found enjoying time with her grandchildren, on the patio watering her plants, watching the birds and squirrels or checking on Papaw to make sure he hadn’t cut off one of his fingers in the wood shop.
She and Papaw enjoyed traveling with her cousin and best friend Billie Hubbard and her husband Jim. They traveled all over the United States from New York to Hawaii often reminiscing with one another and laughing about Papaw’s driving or adventures they found themselves in the middle of. Between trips, if she wasn’t talking to Billie on the phone, she was gossiping and laughing with her other best friend and sister-in-law Joetta Hawkins. Mamaw was never short of good company and her life was filled with the love she gave to all of those around her.
Although she battled dementia in the last decade of her life, she was always ready with a sassy remark or words of love and compassion. She was a gentle spirit with a giving heart from the day she was born until her last breath. Although she will be missed beyond measure, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is completely healed and they will see her again.
She is survived by her sons, Bill Terry (Cheri), and Donald Terry; daughter, Kristi Holt (Jay); her brother, Glenn Hawkin (Joetta); five grandchildren Andy, Courtney, Whitney, Ryan and Travis; two great grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Special thanks her caregivers at Christian Care Communities Fort Worth for the love and care they gave to Mom during the last 5 years.
