Obituary of Donald Ralph Beene
Don Ralph Beene, 86, of Mexia, Texas, passed away on December 9, 2024, at his home. He was born on September 25, 1938, to Ruth and Ralph Beene in Mexia, Texas. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Larry Beene.
Don's life was full of love, laughter, and memorable moments. He met the love of his life, Barbara Jean Sims, in 1963 at East Texas State University. They were married soon after and shared a wonderful life together. Don and Barbara raised three sons: Will, Lane, and Gary, and were proud of their five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
Don had a larger-than-life personality. Standing over 6'3" and weighing 220 pounds, he was hard to miss, but it was his warmth and charm that made him unforgettable. He had a distinctive way of enjoying life, which included his beloved hobbies. Don loved playing golf with his buddies at Walnut Creek Country Club. While he was passionate about the game, he was known for not always adhering to the rules—whether it was miscounting strokes or "finding" lost balls that might not have been his. Despite these playful quirks, he brought joy to everyone around him.
A man of frugality, Don would never pass up a chance to pick up a nickel, no matter where he found it. His love for simple pleasures extended to sitting outside, watching people, keeping up with the latest news on Fox, or following any sporting event—especially his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
Don worked for many years with the Department of Energy and, after retiring, followed his entrepreneurial spirit by opening his own tax business. His office, more golf shop than professional tax office, reflected his unique personality and approach to life. In exchange for his services, Don often accepted watches, dogs, and golf clubs as payment, and he welcomed each client like a friend.
Despite his imposing stature, Don had a special place in his heart for small dogs in need of rescue, and his love for animals was just one example of his tender, caring side.
Don Ralph Beene is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons, Will, Lane, and Gary; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many friends and loved ones who will miss his unforgettable presence. His legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Don's life will be held on January 12, 2025 at Walnut Ridge Baptist hurch beginning at 2:00 p.m.
